Social media continues to be a crucial tool for businesses, brands, and individuals to connect with their audiences and promote their content.
It’s vital to realise that the type of content you post for your business needs to speak directly to, and resonate with, your audience on many deeper levels so relatable content creation is a must for any small business owner.
What do you mean by content creation?
Firstly, content creation is the process of creating content. By creating a piece of marketing material – even something as small as a business card strapline – is content creation. You are creating a piece of information which can help you build and maintain relationships with your audience who are your potential customers.
So, what is social media content creation?
This is the process of writing content to share with your audience online; it also includes the use of photography, images, video and graphics across your various social media platforms. From a simple Tweet to a TikTok video, whatever you have posted is social media content creation because you created it, posted it and shared it online.
But rather than a scattergun approach, there are certain steps to take to ensure that the content you are creating and posting is of value to your audience.
Research
Rather than posting for the sake of it, make sure that your online material resonates with your audience. There is zero value in posting funny cat videos under your brand umbrella, when you are trying to sell interior design expertise. Who is you target audience? What are they interested in? What kinds of lifestyle do they have? Where do they hang-out? Tailor your content to grab their interest in all the right places.
Analyse
If you already have some sort of social media following, analyse your social channels and the content you put out. This will give you an instant picture of what works and what doesn’t.
Listen
Social listening is very important; it’s a great way to keep on top of what is happening in your business sector; look out for trending hashtags, top Tweets, viral video sharing and hot topics and jump on board with what sits right for your brand values and audience message.
Brainstorm
Whether you have a team behind you or you are going it alone, having a creative brainstorm can help! How does what’s going on in your industry translate to your business? How can you explore and expand on ideas. Grab a sheet of paper and a pack of highlighters and start getting creative. You never know, you might just discover a new social media campaign!
Goals
It’s never a bad thing to set yourself some goals, even if you have to move the posts sometimes. Give yourself a ‘to-do’ list: write a regular blog to get better traffic to your website, get 10 new followers on Twitter this week, schedule your latest mix of content media and test it. Whatever it is you want to do, make it measurable so you know if it is working or not.
Plan it
By drawing up a calendar or schedule of your content creation, you are more likely to succeed. If you’ve written and uploaded that blog from your goals list, schedule in a post to promote it and share it! Be more strategic in your posting power.
Analyse…again
Your findings are crucial in knowing what works, what doesn’t and what you need to do next. This then leads to more social listening, more brainstorming, setting new goals, planning and, yep, more analysing. It’s the social media cycle than you need to keep riding to stay visible, relevant and grow your business.
